Manufacturing Safety for Manitoba

Lactalis achieves SAFE Work Certification by Made Safe

Lactalis achieves SAFE Work Certification by Made Safe

Posted on December 16, 2020

As the manufacturing sector partner for SAFE Work Manitoba Certified, Made Safe works with members to assess their readiness, provide support and help companies achieve certification. The process is modelled on internationally-recognized best practices and has demonstrated positive outcomes for individual companies and the industry overall. Certified manufacturers have safer and healthier workplaces, better control of workplace hazards, fewer injuries and illnesses, more engaged and productive employees, and a significant rebate on their WCB premiums.

As the SAFE Work Certified by Made Safe process gains traction, we wanted to showcase just a few of the manufacturers leading the way. It’s our hope that telling their stories and sharing the lessons they learned during the certification process will help pave the path for other manufacturers moving forward.

Lactalis

Lactalis is a global dairy company which employs 60 people at the Lactalis Winnipeg Plant. It serves a market that includes Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Western Ontario. This plant produces various types and sizes of fluid milk and cream, along with other dairy items, such as ice cream and eggnog.

Q. What should readers of this blog know about your company vision and culture?

?As a global leader in Dairy products, Lactalis’ vision is to feed the nation, with an inclusive and diverse team.

Q. What issues did you have as a manufacturer before making the commitment to certification? How did you overcome them?

At the start of the process it seemed daunting to collect all the required documentation, but as we focused section by section, we found that our program was almost there. All that was required was a laser focus approach on each section, coordinating with a few departments and relying on teamwork to overcome the documentation required for our program.

Q. Did you learn any safety or business lessons throughout the process that might help others make the decision to become certified? ?

Lactalis is always learning more about safety. One business lesson we learned is to compile all required safety documents, such as training records, sign-offs, and other documentation in one central location.

Q. What would you say is the biggest benefit of certification so far? ?

Certification shows to our staff and others in manufacturing that Lactalis makes safety a priority within their facilities.
